In search of Lime Sources part 3
In search of sources of Lime for UNESCO. Next to the Blue Nile, 10km south of the Junction from where the road to the Blue Nile Falls leaves the Bahir Dar to Addis Ababa Road, lies the modern St Georges Church. Built on a site of warm, holy, carbonated water this area has rich Travertine lime deposits. They have been brought from underground lime sources 1.5 to 2km below the surface, by warm springs. Over time this carbonated water has formed pure calcium carbonate and we are exploring the length of the deposits that exist, to avoid any investigations that would disturb the church.
