Historic paint analysis and specification

Womerseys can undertake simple paint analysis, to enable you to gain an understanding of the original paint types and colours used on a building. We study paint fragments, which are complex multi-layered structures, by creating thin sections and undertaking microscopic observation. We can then offer suggestions and advice for replacement or renewal of internal and external painted decoration, using lime washers, distempers, natural oil bound water-based emulsions, water glass paints and traditional plant and tree resin-based oil paints for wood. Our advice will also guide you towards the correct preparation of the background, including the necessary priming coats.

Complementary work using Scanning Electron Microscope and chemical analysis, can also be carried out when more in-depth analysis is required. One specific element we can test for is Lead in paint, which is harmful when it becomes degraded, chipped or is being removed. Our Lead paint surveys aim to quantify the amount of hazardous paint present in the building or area. The paint sampled during the survey is then analysed to determine the presence of lead-based paint. Your survey report will detail, the density of the paint, the location, and the amount of hazardous paint present throughout the building.
